Lanny Johnson on Innovation and Entepreunism

Dear Colleagues,

This June, we will hold the 8th Annual Meeting of the CSS (Del Coronado Hotel, San Diego, June 17, 2023). The first part of our meeting will consider Innovation & Entrepreneurism. Many of you are too young to know who Lanny Johnson is, but he is certainly one of the most successful innovators and entrepreneurs of his generation. He developed many of the arthroscopic techniques and tools we now use, and often take for granted. This includes the motorized shaver. He influenced a whole generation of great arthroscopic surgeons who either taught you or your teachers’ teachers. In talking with him about his presentation he sent me the following email:

You got me thinking concerning innovation and remarks I would make.  First is risk, risk aversion and down side safety in the initiation of thinking outside of the box. The second is judgement, the common denominator of excellence. What do you think?”
