Dear Colleagues:

Every so often I have the good fortune to see something so important I am compelled to share it with my colleagues. Some of you may know of Stanford Professor John P.A. Ioannidis. His article (see enclosed), “Why Most Research Findings are False” should be a clarion call for us, as orthopedic surgeons, to do better research so that we can identify the best evidence as a basis for our clinical care decisions for our patients. This is consistent with the observations in the study by McGlynn and colleagues in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2003, “The Quality of Healthcare Delivered to Adults in the United States.” Codman would most certainly approve with this aspiration and strategy.

In 2016 we had the third meeting of the Codman Shoulder Society, and the theme of this meeting was “Evidence & Value: Can we align these? Should we try?” Our keynote speaker was Professor Mohit Bhandari, one of the preeminent experts on Evidence Based Medicine in Orthopedics. He spoke on this topic with his lecture entitled “Driving Better Decisions- What Evidence do we need?” Professor Ioannidis builds on this with great detail regarding all the failings of scientific investigation that is relevant to best evidence for treatment of our patients. Below are several options for links to the Grand Rounds Lecture he gave at Massachusetts General Hospital in March of this year.

Kind Regards,
