Dear Colleagues:
Enclosed is an important article that may please or displease you depending on your perspective on healthcare as an orthopedic surgeon. This article was written in 2014 by two leaders in healthcare. A lot has changed in the 11 years since its writing; however, a lot has not. If you are like me, a Baby Boomer, your frame-of-reference may be the concept of the physician surgeon being the center of patient care. Moreover, it seems eminence and experience remain the differentiators for the best care even though evidence has grown for best practices. Individual reputation was paramount for patients who were lucky enough to find the most skilled surgeon. While this still rings true in many circumstances, the delivery of healthcare requires a major shift in your frame-of-reference given the advancement of skills through improved training, and the huge growth of available evidence for best treatments. Moreover, we have learned that the highest performing organizations in and out of healthcare require a collaborative framework to integrate and coordinate care. This is best built around the patient’s needs.
I encourage you to share this information with your colleagues and the hospital administrators in your organization. Human nature is the same all over the world and human behavior must always be taken into account if our primary focus is the best patient care. This is why I believe the message here is applicable on a global level.
I hope you find this interesting and informative.
Kind Regards,
