8th Annual CSS Meeting Announcement

Dear CSS Members and Colleagues:

It is my pleasure to invite you to the 8th Annual Codman Shoulder Society Meeting. This meeting will be held following the conclusion of the San Diego Shoulder Institute, on Saturday, June 20, 2020 from 4:00-8:00pm at the Hilton Bayfront, San Diego, CA.

Codman was one of the first surgeon entrepreneurs with a specific interest in the shoulder. This year’s meeting will push the envelope, just as Codman would have wanted. We will present a variety of “breakthrough” technologies which offer value propositions to increase the precision, accuracy and efficiency of shoulder surgery. Of course, most of these are focused on shoulder arthritis and its treatment.

I want to share with you that my past description of these technologies as “disruptive” is inaccurate. According to the late Clayton Christensen of Harvard Business School “Disruptive innovations are NOT breakthrough technologies that make products better; rather they are innovations that make products and services more accessible and affordable, thereby making them available to a larger population.”

( https://www.christenseninstitute.org/disruptive-innovations/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7b6arKz45wIVguNkCh1j8AW_EAAYAiAAEgKkzvD_BwE ). Some of the technologies which will be presented may be consistent with the definition of “disruptive innovation” according to Christensen, and some may not. This will, of course, depend on the value proposition presented by each company. For now, I will call these innovations “breakthrough” and we’ll see which might actually be “disruptive.” I will post more about Clayton Christensen’s definition of “Disruptive Innovation” in a separate CSS message.

I would like to thank our industry partners for their willingness to show us these technologies, all of which I believe create great value for our patients.

This year, as I do every year, I invite an expert to offer insight and be our provocateur for discussion of all these technologies. My invited speaker this year is Avi Roop, who is an entrepreneur working in VC in medical technology.

Please plan to attend our meeting and also consider attending the single best educational event in shoulder, The San Diego Shoulder Institute (SDSI). For 37 years, SDSI ( http://sdsi-shoulder.com) has been on the forefront in professional education for management of problems which affect the shoulder.

Kind Regards,

Jon “JP” Warner, MD
