ICSES Codman Lecture Preview (7/9)

Dear Colleagues:

It is not clear that Codman had any partners to help him bring "The End Result Idea" — or his many other innovations and concepts — to other surgeons. I have been blessed with three great partners over my nearly four decades as a shoulder surgeon. Each has been different, yet all have shared the same burning desire as E.A. Codman to improve patient care through innovation.

Peter Millett is a brilliant and creative surgeon who has gone on to develop many products and concepts that help patients. Larry Higgins is a great thinker who helped make me a better collaborator in research that improved patient care, grounded in the principles of value-based care; he later pivoted to become a major innovative force at Arthrex. And Bassem Elhassan has become perhaps the greatest hope for patients with impossibly difficult revision problems — he has created new surgeries to re-animate the shoulder, which he delivers with an infectious optimism for success.

It is hard to imagine my career could have been any better, as each of these men has made me a better surgeon and a better person. So, I want to dedicate my Codman Lecture to each of them.
