ICSES Codman Lecture Preview (8/9)

Dear Colleagues:

None of us achieves any measure of success without our teachers and mentors. Here are some of mine — orthopedic surgeons, a thoracic surgeon, Harvard Business School professors, and my father, Professor Richard Warner.

My father was a pioneer in GI-endocrine tumors and described carcinoid syndrome in 1955. He led by example, through hard work and dedication to a cause. Dr. David Shahian was a champion for value-based care who created the framework for reporting on quality of care for thoracic surgeons at a national level. Professor Regina E. Herzlinger was known as the "Godmother of Healthcare" at Harvard Business School, where she taught a course called "Business Innovations in Global (B.I.G.) Healthcare." Professor Robert S. Kaplan is one of the most influential and creative minds in the world of accounting, and he has dedicated much of his life to the pursuit of measuring value in patient care. Professor Michael E. Porter, the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor, Emeritus, at Harvard Business School, created the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness as well as the Center for Value-Based Healthcare at HBS. Dr. Gilles Walch and Professor Christian Gerber were friends, teachers, and peers, whose ability to see what others could not, and to forge new approaches to improving patient care, was singular in their generation — true innovators who led by example. Dr. Bernard F. Morrey, Chairman of Orthopedics and Dean at Mayo Clinic, was a trusted advisor to me during my term as President of ASES. Dr. Russell F. Warren was a true innovator, a critical and thoughtful surgeon in finding new approaches in arthroscopy, arthroplasty, and sports medicine. And finally, Dr. C. McCollister Evarts, a great leader and surgeon at the University of Rochester, gave me my start in orthopedics in 1982.

I now hope to honor these great men and women in the Codman Lecture I will give at this year's ICSES meeting in Vancouver. I hope to see you there.
