ICSES Codman Lecture Preview (4/9)

Dear Colleagues:

At this year’s International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, I will deliver the 16th Codman Lecture — one of the great honors of my professional life. Unfortunately, none of the 15 prior lectures survive in print or on video.

Carter Rowe gave the inaugural Codman Lecture in 1980, addressing Codman's influence on the development of shoulder surgery. Dr. Rowe was, in fact, one of Codman's last students at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and went on to help found the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.

In 1984, as a young orthopedic resident at MGH, I had the opportunity to assist Dr. Rowe on a surgical case. It is therefore a special honor to deliver this year's Codman Lecture as only the second shoulder surgeon to work at MGH — the very institution where Codman put forth his ideas on shoulder surgery, the "End-Result Concept," and hospital efficiency.
