A message from Wayne “Buz” Z. Burkhead.

Dear Colleagues:
To all of you who don’t know “Buz”, he is one-of-a-kind, and that term might well have been invented for him. In my career he was woven into the fabric of my professional life as he mixed humor with all his wonderful presentations at AAOS and ASES. He is past President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. What most of you may not know is that he has been the main singer in a band named “Buz and The Medicated Trio” — “The only band that takes Medicare and Medicaid Has to be routinely drug tested positive for Viagra, Rogaine, and ibuprofen, but Geritol.” — and he did a great Joe Cocker.
Underneath his flavorful exterior was a true scholar with thoughtful interpretations and creative ideas about how to be the best doctor and surgeon. Humor was just the lubricant which got peoples’ attention. In fact, it is a neurophysiological fact that humor along with a good night's sleep, exercise and a good breakfast, increases most people’s IQ.
When he visited us at Mass General Hospital and Harvard, we put him in the Liberty Hotel which was an old jail with bars on some of the windows. He always said I wanted to put him in jail.
He gave us the following:
The reason I am writing this is to make you aware of his entertaining autobiography. (Please see below)
He is at AAOS tomorrow (3/3) and the next day (3/4), so go see him and get your signed copy. Here is what he told me about the book:
“I had to look up a lot of stuff and there are over 200 footnotes and it's 560 pages long with relatively small print and wrapped round text. I wanted to have one that was 1001 pages which would've been one page longer than Barbra Streisand’s book, but they figured I couldn't mail it and no one could carry it. The electronic version has links to a lot of my songs which were either autobiographical or prognostications. The one I wrote in 1980 during the Iran hostage crisis called Armageddon Amarillo may finally come to pass. It's about drinking beer in a country and western bar during a nuclear holocaust with Iran and they didn't even have a missile back then. With that and predicting my own divorce and that Elon Musk would be a Trump supporter, I refer to myself as Buztradamus.”
