The Business of Education in Shoulder Surgery: A Thank You to 35 Years of Fellows

Dear Former Fellows:
It has been a privilege to play a role in your careers. As I move through the last part of my academic practice, I’d like to recognize all of you and say thank you. I recently received this amazing gift of legacy from a former fellow, Dr. Florian Grubhofer. I wanted to share this with all of you. I apologize to all the Sports Medicine Fellows and visiting international fellows who are not in this image; however, there was insufficient room for all my past fellows.
The first part of my career was at the University of Pittsburgh where I had the opportunity to start training some of the future greatest Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgeons in partnership with my dear friend Freddie Fu and partner Chris Harner. I then went on to the second part of my career at Harvard where I have trained many more great future surgeons and leaders.
Everything we do is in context of the times in which we work, our learning curve on how to teach, and our available resources. When I first started in my role as your teacher, all of the funds we had came from the University and much of this was supported by industry. When I moved to Harvard, I raised almost $5 million to a fellowship fund which allowed me to send many of you to Europe for elective education. Subsequently, funds became more limited, and the scope and scale of our program declined. Moreover, I had the greatest partners in first Peter Millett and second Larry Higgins. Now, Bassem ElHassan is in charge. The lesson here is with great partnership you can do great things in education.
