Academic Excellence vs. Clinical Productivity

Dear Colleagues:
Enclosed is an article you might find of interest. The authors make the point that academics and clinical productivity are not mutually exclusive. Many of you might have the impression that surgeons are one or the other, as there is not enough time to be clinically productive as well as academically productive. That said, I would also suggest that academics is “a state of mind” and an academic title does not mean one is impactful, innovative, or creative. In fact, many of the innovations we have seen come from outside of mainstream academia. The surgeons who create these often do so with no grants and no laboratory funding. I believe that the same passion and curiosity which drive surgeons to become great in their crafts, allows them to ask questions and provide answers in academic publications, and also create innovations which benefit our patients. The point is that the motivation for all of these comes from within, not from the pressure to publish.
